Every modern ad platform is an optimisation engine. It looks at the people who completed your conversion event and finds more people like them. That makes the conversion definition the most important setting in any account.
What goes wrong
- Thank-you pages that load without a form submission, counting visits as leads.
- Pixel installed twice, doubling purchases.
- Micro-events (page views, scrolls) marked as primary conversions.
- No deduplication between browser and server events.
A simple rule
No campaign scales until a test conversion has been completed and seen in every platform's debugging tool — GTM preview, GA4 DebugView, Meta Events Manager and Google Ads conversion diagnostics.
The checklist
- Write a tracking plan with event names and parameters.
- Fire conversions from dataLayer events on real success states.
- Add Conversions API or enhanced conversions with deduplication.
- Reconcile weekly with the CRM or order system.
An algorithm with bad data is confident and wrong.
