Google Tag Manager

Tag Manager is the control room for measurement. Done well, it means marketing can add and fix tracking without waiting for a development release — and trust the numbers.

The building blocks

What goes into Google Tag Manager

dataLayer Event Builder

Compose an event and copy the dataLayer.push code.

How I do it

The process

  1. 1

    Plan

Tracking plan with events and parameters.

  2. 2

    Implement

    dataLayer pushes + GTM tags/triggers.

  3. 3

    QA

Preview, GA4 DebugView, Meta test events.

  4. 4

    Publish

    Versioned with notes.

  5. 5

    Monitor

Alerts for drops in key events.

Principles I follow
  • Write a tracking plan first: event names, parameters, where they fire.
  • Prefer dataLayer events over fragile CSS-selector triggers.
  • Name everything consistently: Platform – Type – Detail.
  • QA in preview mode and in platform debug views before publishing.
  • Publish with version notes so changes are auditable.

Measurement

The numbers I watch

Tools I use

  • TMGoogle Tag Manager
  • G4Google Analytics (GA4)
  • PXMeta Pixel & Conversions API
  • GAGoogle Ads

What you get

  • Tracking plan
  • GTM container build
  • QA checklist
  • Naming conventions
Form conversions under-reported

Ajax forms don't trigger thank-you page views.

Push a dataLayer event on successful submit and fire GA4, Ads and Meta tags from it.

Illustrative example
Does GTM slow the site?

The container is light; heavy tags cause slowness. Audit and remove unused tags.
