Google Search Console

Search Console is Google's own view of a site: which queries show it, how often it's clicked, which pages are indexed and what's broken. It is the most honest SEO data source available.

What goes into Google Search Console

CTR by Position Explorer

How I do it

The process

  1. 1

    Verify

Domain property via DNS for full coverage.

  2. 2

    Connect

Link to GA4 and Looker Studio.

  3. 3

    Segment

    Brand/non-brand, page type, device.

  4. 4

    Act

Snippet rewrites, content upgrades, index fixes.

Principles I follow
  • Segment brand vs non-brand queries — they tell different stories.
  • Find 'striking distance' queries (positions 5–15) with high impressions for quick wins.
  • Compare CTR to expected CTR for each position to spot weak snippets.
  • Review indexing reasons monthly and after releases.

Measurement

The numbers I watch

Tools I use

  • SCGoogle Search Console
  • LSGoogle Looker Studio
  • G4Google Analytics (GA4)

What you get

  • Query opportunity list
  • Indexing issue log
  • GSC dashboard in Looker Studio
Striking-distance wins

Many queries sit at positions 8–12 with high impressions.

Improve the matching sections, add internal links from strong pages and refresh titles.

Illustrative example
Why don't GSC and GA4 numbers match?

GSC counts search clicks; GA4 counts sessions after consent and tracking. Differences are expected.

How long is data retained?

16 months in the interface — export to BigQuery or sheets for longer history.
