On-Page SEO
The building blocks
What goes into On-Page SEO
SERP Snippet Preview
Type a title and description to see how a result may appear, with length guidance.
How I do it
The process
- 1
Intent check
Classify the query (informational, commercial, transactional, navigational) from the SERP.
- 2
Gap review
Compare headings and subtopics with the top results.
- 3
Optimise
Title, meta, H1, copy, images (alt text), schema, internal links.
- 4
Publish & request indexing
Submit in Search Console; add to sitemap.
- 5
Iterate
Review query data after 4–6 weeks; refine snippets and content.
Principles I follow
- Look at the live SERP first: the ranking pages' format tells you the intent Google rewards.
- Write the title for the click, not just the keyword — 50–60 characters, front-loaded.
- Map one primary keyword per URL to prevent cannibalisation.
- Add internal links from high-authority pages to the page being optimised.
- Measure CTR by query in Search Console and rewrite snippets that underperform their position.
Measurement
The numbers I watch
Organic CTR
clicks ÷ impressions
Judge against expected CTR for the average position.
Average position
Per target query, not site-wide.
Ranking keywords per URL
A healthy page ranks for many related long-tail queries.
Engaged sessions
GA4 engaged sessions from organic search.
Tools I use
- WPWordPress
- SRSemrush
- SCGoogle Search Console
- G4Google Analytics (GA4)
What you get
- Keyword-to-URL map
- Optimised title/meta sheet
- Content briefs
- Internal-link plan
High impressions, low clicks
A page sits at position 4 but gets a fraction of the expected clicks.
Rewrite the title and meta description to match the dominant intent and add a specific benefit; test for 4 weeks.
Illustrative exampleTwo pages competing
Two articles target the same keyword and swap positions.
Merge the weaker into the stronger with a 301, consolidate content and internal links.
Illustrative exampleDo meta descriptions affect ranking?
Not directly — but they influence CTR, and Google frequently rewrites them when they don't match the query.
How long should content be?
As long as the intent requires. Length follows completeness; it is not a target in itself.
